The Amulet was the main core driving the story. A usual something brewing. Like the games the movie starts out with fighting. The realm of Edena and Outword…Edenia has lost all but one round. Enters King Jerrod who fights Outworlds champion Shao Khan. Shao Khan is the parasite that everyone wants to kill. He ruthlessly kills King Jerrod in front of Kitana and her mother Sindel, sticking them into the glue complexing their lives even further.
Fights: The fights were epic. The fight with Liu Kang and Shang Tsung from the MK1995 movie…multiply that by 2 or the fight with Hanzo and Bi-Han from the first reboot..multiply it by 10. The fights were epic, the music actually went well with the fights. The fatalities were brutal…but need more variety. More characters should have been in this film along with more stages or backdrops with longer fights. The fights were too epic for short fights and having few characters made it feel rushed.
Tone: A bit darker than the first reboot movie. Had a tone similar to the 1995 version. A bit campy, some horror elements. The blood, the fatalities, the atmosphere was dark, gritty, and campy.
Visuals: The colors were crisper and darker. Everything had that dark horror tone just like in the MK2 video game. The Acid Pool actually looked better in the movie. The acid itself could have used a little more work, however, but the overall aesthetic looked really gritty.
it was missing something. It’s like they didn’t know what direction they wanted to take it. Too much story and not enough fighting, and the fighting, while epic, lacked that feel that made you want to get out of your seat and cheer or something. I went back and watched the originals from 1995, Legacy, and Conquest, and this is what I picked up on. They made this movie too much like the game in the wrong aspects. To top it all off, the story made no sense; it jumped around too much. The movie is great for the aspects of the fights and abilities..but lacked in story and upbeat. Felt like a soap opera more then a fight movie. The writing is all over the place to add to the trauma. Too much story and slow pacing. The original was fast-paced fighting, long fighting with a small detail of story here or there. This felt like it didn’t really have a clear direction of what it wanted to be or even what rating it wanted to be. The fatalities, while gruesome where just redundant and not gruesome enough. I was hoping for a Final Destination + Nightmare on Elm Street silliness fatalities. Gruesome, fun, and funny. Shao Khan was even lackluster.
They want to continue with a 3rd and possible seeming they will bring all characters whom died back. Katina talked about other revanents and Quan Chi although captured is still alive. I think that somehow Kano and Quan Chi is apart of a bigger plan to get the heroes into a big situation.
I cannot really rate the movie at 3 stars, but it definitely is not 4 stars either. I say 3.7 out of 5 due to the inconsistent writing and slow choreography and pacing, and lack of nostalgic moments; its like they were trying to please the new gen but also forgot those of us who put the coins in to the machines years ago to make it get this far. The writers need to go watch the 95 version and MK Conquest and pick out all of what made them awesome and apply it to the 3rd film with what makes this movie good
